My Take on a Gem from Marketing Guru Seth Godin

My Take on a Gem from Marketing Guru Seth GodinSeth Godin is an author, an entrepreneur, and a marketing guru. He was also one of the first people to promote the idea of “permission marketing,” the core concept of content marketing. Seth’s a prolific blogger, with posts that sometimes go into great detail about a marketing concept or business philosophy.

In other instances, he provides pithy statements that get right to the heart of the matter. A recent post was a prime example. He called the following gem “as useful a freelancer marketing strategy as you can fit in a single sentence,” but I think it has application in a broader marketing sense as well:

You'll pay a lot, but you'll get more than you pay for.

Now, any sentence that contains the words “pay” and “lot” can be an immediate turnoff. But let me break this one down to give you my reasoning for why it shouldn’t.

Breaking Down a Business Truism

Let’s consider Seth Godin’s words of wisdom in the context of a marketing automation tool like HubSpot.

  • “You’ll pay…”  Yes, it’s true—it takes money to make money. But you knew that. To succeed in business, you have to make wise investments, whether in technology, advertising, staffing, or any other area.
  • “a lot…” This raises a red flag for many people. But, the reality is, any time we choose to open our wallet and spend some money, it feels like a lot. And that’s all it will ever feel like if you keep staring into that wallet. The key is focusing on the return on that investment. In the case of HubSpot, there are other marketing automation tools out there, but few (or none, in my opinion) deliver the way it does. From my experience, and that of our clients, HubSpot pays for itself.
  • “but you’ll get…” There it is! The part we’re all interested in—and it's why, when we understand how the cycle works, we don’t mind spending some money. Whether its sales, leads, or a competitive advantage that will pay off at some point down the road, as long as we know what we’ll be getting, we’re happy to sign the purchase order.
  • “more than you pay for.” This is the litmus test for whether you’ve chosen wisely! And it applies to everything from marketing automation tools to the services of a content marketing agency that helps you get the most out of them. You want to work with a provider that doesn’t just meet its obligation to you, but goes “above and beyond” to exceed your expectations at every opportunity

How can partnering with us help you not just meet but exceed your marketing objectives? We’d love to talk with you about that.
